ST. PAUL - Grand Rapids junior Jessica Cagle set the Minnesota high school girls discus record during the Class AA track and field meet Friday at Hamline University.

Cagle won the state championship with a throw of 162 feet, 4 inches, which broke Sandy Fuch's 1993 mark of 156-0.

"I felt like I had 160 in me, and I did it," said Cagle, who set the Section 7AA meet record at 149 on May 31.

Class AA runner-up Chari Lehnertz of Winona threw 129.

"I'm honored to finish second next to her," said Lehnertz, who added that she has only seen 150s and 160s thrown by boys.

Cagle, in her fourth state meet appearance, almost didn't make it to St. Paul after two scratches during section preliminaries in Elk River.

"It was tense moment," coach Dan Jinks said May 31. "She gave us a scare, but she recovered."

In 2007, Cagle held the Class AA top seed distance at 148-7, but finished second. In 2006, she was eighth and, in 2005, she was fifth.
