Grand Marais, Minn., has been named the coolest small town in the country after weeks of voting in Budget Travel Magazine’s 10th Annual America’s Coolest Small Town Contest.
Grand Marais competed with 14 other small towns and ended up with 30 percent of more than 100,000 votes when the contest closed Wednesday, according to the magazine. It beat out Chincoteague, Va.; Hillsborough, N.C.; and Allegan, Mich., to take the win.
The magazine defines a cool small town as one that has "an energetic vibe that often combines community spirit with a vibrant arts scene, great food, natural beauty, and unique history."
The magazine also noted Grand Marais’ bed and breakfasts, its arts community, restaurants, the annual Fisherman’s Picnic and the Superior National Forest.
Local tourism agency Visit Cook County is planning to celebrate with a "Toast to the Town" party from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Voyageur Brewing in Grand Marais.
