Candidates for Minnesota's 8th Congressional District traded barbs Monday over Democrat Jim Oberstar's hometown voting history.
Former U.S. Sen. Rod Grams, a Republican, questioned how often Oberstar voted in his hometown of Chisholm. In a news release sent via the Internet, Grams' campaign asked and answered: "When Was the Last Time Oberstar Voted in Chisholm? Not since 1998 Oberstar has voted in person."
But St. Louis County records show Oberstar voted mostly by absentee ballot in primary elections, but showed up to vote in Chisholm in six out of seven past general elections.
Staffers with the Grams campaign said they got their information from the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office.
The Grams campaign has said Oberstar doesn't represent Northeastern Minnesota anymore, centering on the representative's home in a Maryland suburb.
