The Duluth Police Department is advising people to exercise caution after two recent incidents involving men who reportedly attempted to grab women.

Police were called to the Marshall School about 1 p.m. Jan. 30 after a teenage girl was approached by an unknown man at the rear of the building. He allegedly grabbed the girl, but she broke free and ran back into the building. The suspect was described as a white man, 40 to 50 years old, about 6 feet tall with a long gray beard. The man was dressed in a dark knee-length coat, a black winter coat and ragged blue jeans.

A second incident occurred at 10:39 p.m. Sunday, when two female college students were walking near 19th Avenue East and Fourth Street. An unknown man approached and reportedly grabbed one of the women by her jacket. He took off running when one of the women screamed. The suspect was described as a white man dressed completely in black, including a ski mask.

No suspects in either case have been located. The victims were not robbed or verbally threatened, and no weapons were seen in either case.

Anyone with information on either incident is asked to call Duluth police at (218) 730-5050.

Police offered several safety tips:

  • You are safest in bright, well-lit and busy streets.
  • Walk with others, not alone.
  • Act confidently. Look like you know where you're going.
  • Carry a cell phone.
  • Wear bright clothing.
  • Don't show off valuables.
  • If someone attempts to take something from you, hand it over rather than risk a confrontation.
  • Do not listen to a personal stereo or use your cell phone while walking or jogging.
  • If you think you're being followed, cross the road. If you are followed, cross back again. If you are still concerned, go to the nearest public place, business or house with lights on and call 911.
