The Hermantown City Council on Tuesday approved a resolution to pursue state legislative support toward asking residents to approve a sales tax increase in November.

The request calls for a half-percent hike to help pay for various recreation projects. According to a city news release, these include additions to the Hermantown Hockey Arena, adding another sheet of indoor ice and improving outdoor rinks; reconfiguring and adding turf to Fichtner Field; and extending accessible paths and trails in the city.

The council voted 4-1 for the measure, which is a first step toward putting the question to voters on the general election ballot.

If approved, the tax increase would generate about $1.5 million per year. The total cost to all three portions of the project would be $28 million, the city reported.
