A Gilbert man was airlifted to a Duluth hospital after suffering a head injury in an ATV crash late Friday.

Authorities were called to the 6300 block of Ajax Road, in Biwabik Township, around 8:40 p.m. after the driver, Thomas O. Makela, failed to negotiate a turn and struck a tree, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reported.

Makela, 62, was taken by ambulance to Northern Pines Hospital in Aurora and then flown by Life Link III to Essential Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was said to have facial and head injuries, but there was no immediate update on his condition Saturday.

The sheriff's office said Makela was not wearing a helmet, and speed was believed to be a factor.
