The Duluth Public Works and Utilities department is planning to upgrade a gas main in downtown Duluth beginning Monday.
The project, located on Third Avenue East between Superior and Michigan streets, is a preparatory step before phase two of the Superior Street reconstruction project begins next year. The gas upgrade will ensure that properties served by the gas main will have long-term reliable service, according to the city.
The avenue will be closed during the project, which is expected to be completed in about two weeks. Bituminous surface is expected to be installed for the winter on the avenue and a permanent road surface will be installed next spring, according to the city. Crews will be working at the site from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Signed detours will be installed while the avenue is closed. Two-way traffic will be allowed heading south from Fourth Avenue East at Superior Street to access businesses and parking on the 300 block of Michigan Street, according to the city. Access to the Interstate 35 entrance ramp from East Second Avenue and Michigan Street will be maintained.
