Supporters of the Leif Erickson Viking ship will hold a fundraiser June 24 to help raise money to protect the ship. The event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Great Lakes Aquarium. Tickets cost $30.
All proceeds from the dinner and silent auction will go toward completion of the protective roof over the Leif Erikson Viking ship, which is now shrink-wrapped for temporary protection.
"The restoration of the ship has been completed," Neill Atkins, chairman of the Leif Erikson Restoration Project, said in a news release. "We're working with the City of Duluth on funding and grants to complete the protective roof structure, but we can't do it alone. We need financial support from the entire community and this fundraiser is the ideal way to take the last steps toward finishing this project."
Tickets for the event can be reserved by e-mail at duluthvikingship@gmail.com .
The ship arrived in Duluth on June 23, 1927, sailed here from Norway by a four-man crew.
