A fundraiser to help fuel local veterans' vans kicks off today.
The Duluth Honor Guard and the Minnesota Assistance Council for Veterans-Duluth each use a van to travel to funerals; school and community events; medical runs; food and toy deliveries; and parades.
St. Louis County Commissioner Peg Sweeney, who led the drive, said the Honor Guard travels to 200 funerals a year.
"The vans need gas money," she said. "It costs about $5,000 a year in gas for each van."
To donate gas cards in any amount to the van project, send them to: MACV-Duluth, 101 W. Second St., Duluth, MN 55802; VFW Post 137, 2024 W. Michigan St., Duluth MN 55806; or American Legion Post 71, 5879 Grand Ave., Duluth, MN 55807.
