Alyssa Lommel, the 20-year-old female college student who was severely frostbitten last December, returned to classes at the University of Minnesota Duluth Tuesday.
Mother Teri Lommel created a post on her daughter’s CaringBridge website Monday that said she was all moved in and excited to pick up her books and get back into the classroom.
“She makes me so proud to know she is diving right back into college life,” Terri Lommel wrote on Alyssa the CaringBridge site. “I feel that she will do incredibly well.”
Lommel was hospitalized Dec. 7, when she was found on the steps of a neighbor’s home along Woodland Avenue. It’s estimated she spent nearly nine hours outside on a night when the temperature dipped to 17 degrees below zero.
While hospitalized at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Lommel lost parts of her feet and all of her fingers in January due to frostbite.

Lommel’s family has high hopes for her this school year and feels she will excel at the university.
“She has always been a fantastic student and I have no doubt that will continue,” wrote Terri Lommel . “Especially now since she feels like she has something to prove. I think she has already proven to many of us how much of a rock star she truly is.”
