A blast of cool air settled over parts of Minnesota's Arrowhead early Thursday, sending temperatures below freezing in a few areas for the first time this season.

Embarrass, as is often the case, was the cold spot with a low of 28 degrees this morning. Ely, Orr and the Grand Marais airport reported 30. Hibbing, Silver Bay and Eveleth hit 32. International Falls recorded a low of 33, while the Duluth airport recorded 38 for a low.

The early frost isn't unusual. The median date (half before, half after) for temperatures to hit 32 is Sept. 10 in Cook, Sept. 14 in Hibbing, Sept. 23 at the Duluth airport and Oct. 18 at the Duluth harbor.

The National Weather Service in Duluth had issued a frost advisory for parts of northern Minnesota but reported isolated frost areas and no widespread freeze this morning.

Temperatures for the next several days should remain well above freezing.
