A birthday party on Park Point nearly ended tragically Friday evening when one girl started to get swept out into Lake Superior.

Duluth firefighters were called to the 3300 block of Minnesota Avenue at 7:45 p.m. with a report that a girl was in trouble in the water, said Jarry Keppers, acting assistant fire chief.

By the time firefighters arrived, other girls had been able to help their friend get back to the beach, Keppers said. About a half-dozen teenage girls and a parent had been at the beach to celebrate a birthday. An ambulance had been dispatched but the victim, who was 15, didn't require medical attention.

Keppers said a yellow-flag warning had been in effect all day. That means there is a moderate risk of rip currents.

"They probably should not have been in the water," Keppers said. "The waves were pretty big."

It wasn't clear if the victim got caught in a rip current or the waves simply became too much, he said. Waves were 1 to 3 feet.
