Longtime Douglas County Sheriff Fred Johnson died April 27 in Sun Lakes, Ariz. He was 91.
Johnson was elected sheriff in 1968 and served 20 years in the position. He was a member of the Superior Police Department from 1951-68.
Born and raised in Superior, Johnson served as an Army Medic with the 32nd Infantry Division during World War II. He was awarded three Bronze Stars and received a Purple Heart for being wounded in action.
A graveside service with military honors will be held Friday at the Valley of the Sun Cemetery in Chandler, Ariz. Johnson's wife, Christine, died in February.
