FOX 21 WEATHER UPDATE for Sept. 3: Mostly sunny and cooler; HI: 65; LO: 44

Good morning, here's your weather discussion for Wednesday, Sept. 3:

Even though the the official beginning of fall isn't until Sept. 22, the warmest three months of the year, on average, have passed us by. Sept. 1 marked the first day of meteorological fall and it certainly will feel like it the rest of the week. According to the fine folks over at the National Weather Service in Duluth, meteorological summer, or the three months consisting of June, July and August, were just about average this year. After a little number-crunching, they found that the Duluth International Airport had an average temperature of 62.9 degrees, which was very close to the normal of 63.0 degrees. After a very dry August, with only 2.90 inches, the airport ended up with 12.69 inches of rain for the summer, which is 0.02 inches above normal. The airport normally sees about two days at 90 degrees or more, but there were none this year. The top daytime high temperature was 86 degress on July 6; however, a few places around the area had a couple of days around the 90-degree mark. The jet stream -- or strong upper level wind that divides the warm, humid air to the south and the cool, dry air to the north -- has dipped south of the Northland. This weather pattern will continue over the next five to seven days, so you'll probably see a few people wearing warmer clothing.
