Come Monday, the reconstruction of Duluth's East Fourth Street will commence with the closure of the segment between Eighth and 10th avenues east. Work on a gas line between 12th and 14th avenues east also will begin, blocking off access to the sidewalk and shoulder of the road in that area.

As work progresses, the road closure will grow westward to include the corner of Sixth Avenue East. Meanwhile, the gas line work will extend to 18th Avenue East.

Drivers are urged to slow down, pay attention and use caution when traveling in and near the work zone.

The project will result in the reconstruction of about two miles of Fourth Street and the replacement of water, gas and sewer lines that run below it. In all, the project is expected to cost about $13.8 million, making it the most expensive single project St. Louis County Public Works has ever undertaken. Funding for the work will come from a combination of federal and state aid, city funds and the proceeds of a transportation sales tax.

The project will take two years to complete. This year, crews will tackle no more than the segment of road between Sixth and 14th avenues east.

Detour signs will be set up, with eastbound buses rerouted onto Second Street and westbound buses running down Third Street.
