The Fourth of July started off on a very wet note for parts of the Northland, with one weather station recording more than 5 inches of rain.
While the Twin Ports saw a quick round of heavy rain Sunday morning, western and northern parts of the region saw more-prolonged rainfall starting late Saturday. Weather observation stations near the Canadian border recorded the greatest rain totals, including:
2.81 inches at International Falls. That rainfall prompted the National Weather Service to issue some flash flood warnings in the early morning. The Weather Service reported that some of the moisture in the atmosphere that helped to produce the heavy rain was from the remnants of Hurricane Alex, which hit Mexico and southern Texas last week.
Elsewhere, rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches were reported on the Iron Range. The official rainfall total at the Duluth International Airport through 5 p.m. Sunday was 0.56 inches.
