A flood warning is in effect for northern St. Louis County through Monday afternoon, after heavy rain overnight sparked rapid rises on the Vermilion River near Buyck and Crane Lake.
The National Weather Service reported that the area received 1 to 2 inches of rain since midnight, on top of 2 to 4 inches of rain that fell over the weekend. River gauges indicated that the Vermilion River rose 1 to 2 feet in just a few hours this morning. Additional rainfall is possible today.
Meanwhile, a string of slow-moving showers and storms caused flooding on parts of the Iron Range on Sunday evening.
The Weather Service reported that rainfall rates reached nearly 2 inches an hour in Hibbing at times. Chisholm also received heavy rain. The Weather Service relayed reports of water on the roadway along Minnesota Highway 37 east of Hibbing, and along U.S. Highway 169 between Hibbing and Chisholm. The Hibbing Police Department reported some minor problems overnight with a few streets covered by water along with some basement flooding.
An urban and small stream flood advisory was issued for the area for several hours Sunday night.

A flood watch remains in effect for most of the Northland, including Duluth and Superior, through Monday evening. Showers and storms may bring heavy rain to parts of the region on Monday, which - combined with the rain that fell over the weekend - may cause some flooding problems.
Much of the region saw 1 to 3 inches of rain over the weekend. From Saturday through Sunday evening, the Duluth airport received 1.58 inches of rain.
Flooding also was reported Sunday in the Twin Cities, where some locations received as much of 3 to 5 inches of rain in 24 hours.
