Sun Country Airlines plans to continue to offer charter flights from Duluth International Airport during its Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

Sun Country is expected to offer 17 round-trip charter flights this calendar year, primarily involving Boeing 737s seating 189 passengers. The carrier has routinely provided flights to destinations in Mexico, Las Vegas and Reno.

An Internet listing for the Riverside Resort & Casino in Laughlin, Nev., showed a sold-out Duluth-to-Laughlin charter scheduled for Oct. 22.

While Sun Country is not a huge player on the local scene, "the charter activity they provide is certainly a nice supplement to our scheduled service," said Brian Ryks, executive director of the Duluth Airport Authority.

Sun Country isn't the only charter carrier in Duluth. Ryks said Xtra Airways offers a similar number of charter flights from Duluth.
