The National Weather Service in Duluth has issued a flash flood watch for much of the Northland with heavy rain expected overnight into Tuesday.

A broad area of 1 to 2 inches is expected across northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin, but some areas could see four or more inches -- on top of streams, lakes and lowlands that already are mostly full of water from recent rain.

Rainfall is expected to start as night falls across the region with the heaviest rain overnight and then tapering off by noon Tuesday.

Several severe thunderstorms are expected to pop up overnight as well with strong wind events possible around midnight in the Twin Ports as the system moves through, said Rick Hluchan, Weather Service meteorologist in Duluth.

The Weather Service warns people who live near streams or in other low-lying areas to keep a sharp eye out into Tuesday for rapidly rising waters, especially near bridges and culverts. Never try to drive through flooded areas.

The system is expected to move through fast, with sunny skies returning by Tuesday afternoon.
