First day of filing leads to primary

After the first day of the candidate filing period Wednesday, a primary election was already scheduled in St. Louis County Commissioner District 5 when two challengers filed against Commissioner Peg Sweeney of 826 Almac Drive, Proctor.

John Lukan, 6683 Schultz Lake Road, Duluth, and Ken Harnell, 6794 Industrial Road, Saginaw, both have filed for the seat. Sweeney beat Harnell in the 1996 election for her first term.
A statewide DFL primary was also guaranteed when three candidates filed for the party's U.S. Senate nomination. The endorsed candidate, state Sen. Jerry Janezich of Chisholm, has filed, as have two perennial candidates, Dick Franson and Ole Savior, both of Minneapolis.
The seat is now held by Sen. Rod Grams, a Republican, who filed Wednesday, as did Independence Party candidate Leslie Davis of Minneapolis.
A general election contest was also guaranteed in St. Louis County Commissioner District 1 when Carl E. Hammerberg Sr., 715 Pleasant View Rd., Duluth, filed against incumbent Dennis E. Fink.
Also filing for commissioner Wednesday was 3rd District incumbent commissioner Bill Kron.
Two candidates also filed for the St. Louis County Soil and Water Conservation District. Ray Busch of Babbitt filed in District 2 North, while David T. Davis of 5916 Morris Thomas Road, Duluth, filed in District 4 South.
Other filings for the Legislature were as follows:
* Senate District 5 -- Incumbent District 5B state Rep. David Tomassoni, DFL-Chisholm, filed for Janezich's open seat.
* Senate District 7 -- Davy "Diesel Dave" Jones has filed as a candidate of the Constitution Party to run against state Sen. Sam Solon, a DFLer, who has yet to file.
* House District 5A -- Incumbent Rep. Tom Rukavina, DFL-Virginia, has filed for re-election to what would be his eighth term.
* House District 7A -- Incumbent Rep. Dale Swapinsky, 721 Lincoln Parkway, DFL-Duluth, has filed for re-election to what would be his first full term in the House.
* House District 7B -- Incumbent Rep. Mike Jaros, 619 E. 6th St., DFL-Duluth, has filed in a quest for his 13th term.
In Hermantown, City Councilors Fran Hubert and David Allen have filed for mayor. Incumbent Dan Urshan has indicated that he will not seek re-election.
Kay Knight, executive director of the Hermantown Chamber of Commerce, has filed for the Hermantown City Council. The seats held by councilors Debbie Ortman and Hubert are both up this year.
Also filing Wednesday was 8th District Congressman James Oberstar, who is seeking a 14th two-year term.
