Three University of Minnesota Duluth students were displaced, but uninjured, after a house fire late Friday night.
The blaze was reported on the second story of a home on the 200 block of West Kent Road, a block from campus, shortly after 11:30 p.m., according to the Duluth Fire Department. A neighbor had heard smoke detectors going off and called 911, while also notifying an occupant in the basement.
Assistant Fire Chief Dennis Edwards said the occupant was able to safely evacuate and crews from the UMD fire station were on the scene within three minutes. Three other stations assisted in attacking the fire, first from exterior and then inside.
Damages were estimated at $50,000, with major repairs needed in the bedroom and smoke damage seen throughout the house. The fire department said the three students were able to make accommodations to stay with friends.
No injuries were reported. The cause remains under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's Office.
