An Eveleth family was displaced after a large fire broke out in the attic area of their 800 block Pierce Street home on Friday.
Firefighters had extinguished a small insulation fire at the same address earlier in the day, according to Eveleth Fire Chief Guy Spurlin.
Then around 6 p.m., heavy smoke and flames developed along the roof and attic area. Crews started fighting the flames from the inside, but later had to switch to an aerial attack when the roof started to collapse.
Spurlin could not yet give a damage estimate on Sunday, but called the roof, attic and second floor damage "very extensive." The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
