At around 7 p.m. Friday, the St. Louis County emergency dispatch center began receiving reports of a loud boom on Island Lake Reservoir near a home at 6906 W. Van Rd.
An official on the scene said two people were injured when a personal watercraft exploded, causing a neighboring pontoon boat to catch fire, as well.
Ann Eliason, 56, and Timothy Eliason, 56, were both out on jet skis Friday evening. After suspecting some type of explosion when Timothy started his jet ski, Ann located his jet ski on fire and Timothy unconscious in the water, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office. She performed live saving efforts and was able to revive him.
Township firefighters and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad responded. Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service transported the injured parties to a hospital in Duluth to receive medical care for burns.
The cause of the explosion is not yet known, and the incident remains under investigation.
