A 77-year-old Eveleth woman died Tuesday morning after calling 911 to report that she was trapped inside a burning house.

A St. Louis County dispatcher received the call at 10:58 a.m. When Eveleth police and fire crews arrived at the scene in the 700 block of North Court, the house was already fully engulfed in flames, according to a news release from Eveleth Police Capt. Tim Koivunen.

Because of the flames, heavy smoke and extreme heat, emergency responders were unable to enter the residence, Koivunen said in the release. The woman's body was found inside the house after the fire was extinguished.

The woman's identification is being withheld pending an autopsy by the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office. Eveleth police and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the fire.

The Biwabik, Central Lakes, Fayal Township, Gilbert, Mountain Iron and Virginia fire departments assisted at the scene, along with Gilbert police, Eveleth Ambulance Service, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and the Eveleth Public Works Department.
