The homeowner was injured and the family’s dog died when a fire destroyed a travel trailer in Fredenberg Township on Monday morning.
Firefighters were called to 6223 Lavaque Road about 8:20 a.m. Monday, said Linda Bergstrand, chief of the Fredenberg Volunteer Fire Department. The travel trailer, which served as a summer residence, was engulfed when they arrived, she said. All of the residents had safely escaped, but the homeowner received cuts while trying to rescue the dog. The homeowner later went in the hospital for stitches.
"We don't know what happened. I tried to save the dog. It was already engulfed in flames. And when I broke the windows open, it was done," homeowner Adam Warner told WDIO-TV.
Bergstrand said she didn’t know how many people had been staying in the travel trailer but said that all were sheltering in a nearby home with people known to them.
The trailer was a total loss, she said, with the loss estimated at $20,000. The cause hasn’t been determined.
Firefighters from Gnesen and Grand Lake townships and the Air National Guard also responded, she said.
