A man was taken to a hospital for possible smoke inhalation after Duluth firefighters carried him out of a house fire Thursday evening.
Firefighters were called to a five-unit building at 223 E. Fifth St. at 6:42 p.m. and were alerted that a man was inside refusing to leave. Fire crews carried the man out while others determined the fire was in a first floor apartment, according to Duluth Fire Assistant Chief Jim Ray. A woman told firefighters she had dropped a lighter, igniting a mattress.
The fire was contained to that bedroom although the rest of the building was filled with thick smoke. None of the other three tenants was injured, Ray said. He estimated the building damage at $10,000.
