A Gilbert family is homeless after a fire destroyed two houses in the Iron Range community on Thursday night.

Gilbert Fire Chief Dave Knutson said firefighters were called at about 10:30 p.m. to the 300 block of Wisconsin Avenue West, where two neighboring houses were burning.

One of the houses was vacant. The other was occupied by a family of five, Knutson said, but all escaped safely.

The fire apparently began in one house and spread to the other, he said.

Both were engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived.

Although it was too late to save those houses, firefighters remained on the scene until 3:30 a.m. to protect nearby structures, Knutson said. A total of 42 firefighters from Gilbert, Eveleth and Fayal Township fought the fires.

"The mutual support was fantastic," Knutson said.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined, he said, but arson wasn't a factor.

The displaced family spent the night with relatives and met with the fire marshal on Friday morning about relocating, Knutson added. Their two-story home was insured.
