A fire destroyed a garage at a Piedmont Heights home Saturday night, causing an estimated $120,000 in damage but no injuries, Duluth fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to the fire at 2802 Hagberg St. shortly before 10:30 p.m. and found the structure fully engulfed, with flames shooting above the roof.

Crews were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other property nearby, including a shed with fuel stored inside, a delivery van, a 28-foot enclosed trailer, a motor home and a personal watercraft.

"The owner discovered the fire when he opened the garage door to use the car," the fire department said in a news release. "Thick black smoke prevented him from entering and removing anything inside. He described the fire rolling up the back wall and across the ceiling."

Along with the garage, the fire destroyed a car, a pickup truck, a race car and a large inventory of tools and equipment, fire officials said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but officials think it may have started with a furnace.
