The Solway Township volunteer fire department is getting a $110,818 grant from the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program, U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., announced Friday.

The Solway Township volunteer fire department is getting a $110,818 grant from the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program, U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., announced Friday.

Solway Fire Chief Wayne Suliin said the money will be used to purchase wild-land firefighting gear, training equipment and self-contained breathing units.

In a prepared statement, Oberstar said it was a wise allocation of Homeland Security funding.

"We rely on firefighters and other first responders to be ready for any disaster, but rural communities do not always have the funds to be fully prepared," Oberstar said. "Making sure our first responders have the tools and training they need has to be a national priority.
