Duluth firefighters responded to a report of a house fire at the Thomas Bester residence, 3818 Grand Ave., early Sunday morning.
A smoke detector may have made the difference between life and death, according to Acting Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Keppers.
A smoke alarm alerted residents of the home to a fire at 3:18 a.m., prompting four people to evacuate and call for help.
The fire began in the ceiling and had crept into a wall, producing heavy smoke. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and cleared the scene at 4:40 a.m., according to Keppers, who said the fire appears to have begun a result of an electrical problem.
No one in the home was injured, Keppers said. Two children were in the residence, including Bester's daughter and her friend who was visiting for a sleep-over. Two dogs also were successfully removed from the home.

Damage from the fire was estimated at $10,000 to $20,000.
