A Billings Park home was extensively damaged Thursday afternoon in a fire that was blamed on improper disposal of cigarettes.
The Superior Fire Department was dispatched to the single-family house at 2506 N. 20th St. at 12:29 p.m. and found heavy smoke and flames upon arrival, Battalion Chief Erik Sutton said.
Crews attacked the main body of the fire, but the blaze had extended into the attic, causing significant damage, Sutton said. One person was home at the time and was able to safely escape before firefighters arrived on scene.
Sutton said the cause was ruled accidental, with damage to the structure estimated at $80,000.
