An fire attributed to arson destroyed two businesses in Virginia early Friday morning, causing more than $300,000 in property damage.

Firefighters and police were called to the fire at 621 Ninth St. N. at 1 a.m. Friday. By then the rear of building, which contained Nelson-Collie Electric and a barbershop, was on fire, according to Darrell Knapper of the Virginia Fire Department. Detectives on the scene determined the cause of the fire was arson, based on the time it occurred and the fact that the fire started at the exterior of the building.

The case remains under investigation, said an officer with the Virginia Police Department.
