Sunday night at 10:20 p.m., Duluth Fire Department crews responded to a report of smoke in a bedroom at 1505 97th Avenue West. Upon arrival, smoke was venting from the eves and thick smoke was encountered on the second floor of the house. A large fire was found in the bedroom. Although this fire was contained to the one room, damages are estimated at $40,000 to the home and $10,000 to the contents.
The occupants were unharmed. The owner and his daughter said they were watching television in an adjoining room when they noticed the smoke. An attempt to use a portable fire extinguisher was thwarted due to the blinding smoke. Fortunately, they closed the bedroom door which helped stop the spread of the fire.
The Duluth Deputy Fire Marshal is on the scene investigating the cause.
