A convicted felon arrested in April after a two-hour standoff with police in Grand Rapids was sentenced Wednesday to nearly five years in prison for felony burglary.
Steven Lee Carpentier, 25, of Grand Rapids was sentenced to 58 months in prison and was ordered to pay $500 in restitution, a $125 fine and to provide a DNA sample. Carpentier pleaded guilty to one count of burglary in the first degree on June 11 in State District Court in Grand Rapids.
Carpentier and a juvenile allegedly stole a firearm and other items from a residence on April 14. According to the criminal complaint, a man entering his apartment interrupted the burglary. He discovered that several items -- including a 9 mm pistol with two 10-round magazines -- were missing.
A police officer followed footprints from the apartment and saw a person matching the description of the intruder. When the officer called to him, the suspect fled on foot into a nearby residence. A crisis negotiator made contact with the suspects and was able to get them to exit the residence about 4:30 p.m. They were arrested without incident.
Law enforcement officers found the missing handgun -- with a full magazine, loaded, with a round in the chamber and the hammer cocked -- in the apartment, the complaint said.
