One man died as a result of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident on Getchell Road in Duluth on Friday afternoon.
Duluth firefighters, police and Gold Cross ambulance were called at
2:42 p.m. that an SUV and car had collided head-on in icy conditions and that at least one of the vehicles was in a ravine, said Richard Mattson, assistant Duluth fire chief.
According to Duluth police, a blue 2002 Jeep Liberty was traveling northbound on Getchell Road near the St. Louis River Road when it lost control and crossed over, striking a southbound silver 2000 Ford Focus. Both vehicles came to rest in the opposite side ditches. The driver of the Focus, a 41-year-old Duluth man, had to be extricated from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 21-year-old male driver of the Liberty was taken to Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth for a minor non-life-threatening injury to his leg. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash and both drivers were wearing seatbelts.
