Facts about Down syndrome
* It's a chromosomal disorder that occurs at conception. It often causes delays in physical, intellectual and language development.
* People with Down syndrome benefit from loving homes, early intervention, special education, appropriate medical care and positive public attitudes.
* Down syndrome affects about one in every 733 live births (about 4,000 people each year).
* About 30 percent to 50 percent of people with Down syndrome have heart defects, and 8 percent to 12 percent have gastrointestinal tract abnormalities that are present at birth. Most of the defects can be corrected by surgery.
