A 20-year-old Eveleth man was airlifted to Duluth with unknown injuries after a snowmobile accident south of Eveleth on Friday night.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reported that the Virginia Police Department stopped a vehicle in the city at 10:43 p.m. Friday and learned that the vehicle had an unconscious man in it who was being driven to the emergency room at Essentia Health-Virginia Clinic. The man, who hadn't been identified Saturday afternoon, was involved in a snowmobile accident on Heikkila Lake in the Central Lakes area, according to the sheriff's office.

A Virginia ambulance transported the man to the emergency room, where he was airlifted to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center. The extent of his injuries were unknown on Saturday morning, the sheriff's office said.

The incident is under investigation by the sheriff's office, which reported that speed, alcohol and operator inexperience appear to be factors in the snowmobile accident.
