Ely Public Schools moves to distance learning

The city of Ely has had 31 new cases in the past week. Tower has had eight new cases in the same time frame.

Ely Public Schools announced Friday it would be moving all students to distance learning starting after Thanksgiving break through December.

Elementary school students have in-person learning and secondary students are in hybrid learning. The district started the school year with in-person learning for all students.

According to a letter to families, Ely Public Schools administration will meet with the Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Education and will share more information with families Monday afternoon.

"St. Louis County case rate data, as well as the significant increase of cases in our local community, has impacted the school’s decision to move to a distance learning model through the month of December," the letter said.

St. Louis County had a single-day record 348 new COVID-19 cases Thursday. The city of Ely has had 31 new cases in the past week. Tower has had eight new cases in the same time frame.

Hermantown Community Schools also announced a model change Friday. Its elementary school will move to distance learning after Thanksgiving.
