Two Carlton County lakes have elevated levels of E. coli or fecal matter in testing done by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

Moosehead Lake has had high levels of E. coli near the campground, and Big Hanging Horn Lake has elevated levels of fecal matter near the south end. Swimming is not recommended at Moosehead Lake and swimmers should avoid the south end of Big Hanging Horn.

Both lakes will be tested regularly until the bacteria are at an acceptable level.
