The Duluth City Council will have eight candidates to choose from to represent the city's 4th District -- an area that includes Lincoln Park, Piedmont Heights, Duluth Heights and the Hillside neighborhoods.

Today was the final opportunity for would-be city councilors to file for the seat, which will be opened early next year when Kerry Gauthier accepts his new post as a Minnesota state representative in St. Paul.

The eight candidates who stepped forward are Bill Elliott, Gordon Grant, Jacqueline L. Halberg, Garry Krause, Pete MacInnes, Wade Petrich, Sarah M. Priest and Tony Salls.

Whoever is selected to fill the slot will remain in office only until voters can select a replacement in the next general election.

Correction: An earlier version of this story omitted candidate Sarah Priest.

Peter Passi covers city government for the Duluth News Tribune. He joined the paper in April 2000, initially as a business reporter but has worked a number of beats through the years.
