The Duluth Public Library will host a free interactive poetry event for children and families at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Main Library Green Room, 520 W. Superior St.
The Spirit of the Lake Poetry series’ “Poems in the Night” will be led by award-winning author Susan Marie Swanson. Swanson will read poems about the night and then lead audience members in creating their own night poetry. The event is targeted toward children in grades K-5, but other ages also are welcome.
Swanson’s books for children include “Getting Used to the Dark: 26 Night Poems” and four picture books.
She has fellowships in poetry from the Bush Foundation, the McKnight Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board, as well as the McKnight Artist Fellowship in Children’s Literature. In addition, she has been writing with children in arts education programs for many years, teaching in the COMPAS school residency program, in the school partnerships program of the American Swedish Institute, and in summer arts programs at St. Paul Academy, the Friends School of Minnesota and the Loft Literary Center.
