Griffin could use a hand

The story of Griffin, a Shih Tzu-poodle puppy who was too weak to stand when recovered from an Eveleth home last week, prompted several readers to ask if there was any way to help the unfortunate canine.

The short answer is: Yes.

Checks to assist with Griffin's recovery can be sent to the Mesabi Humane Society at 2305 Southern Drive, Virginia, MN 55792. You also can donate online at www.mesabihumane.org .

The dog was found when officers were executing a search warrant at the Joshua Ray Gordon residence. The puppy had head injuries, and Gordon is accused of trying to flush him down a toilet. The 18-year-old man appeared in court Wednesday to face a cruelty to animals charge, in addition to drug and domestic assault charges.

While the Humane Society already has a line on several potentially good homes for Griffin, the group has many other deserving animals in need of caring families.

We take back what we said about the mayor being crazy

Well, this is embarrassing.

On Wednesday, we told you Mayor Don Ness was going to be one of 500 crazies jumping into Lake Superior for this year's Special Olympics Polar Bear Plunge.

That's what the publicist guy in the Twin Cities said, anyway.

Now City Hall watchdog reporter Brandon Stahl tells us the mayor's response to that news was something along the lines of, "Oh, no, I never said that."

The Eh? desk hasn't been able to reach the mayor to find out whether he's a "maybe" or a "heck, no," but for now you'd better not count on him taking the plunge.

But, as we said, 500 other crazies will, starting 3 p.m. Saturday somewhere on the Canal Park lakeshore (exact location depending on weather conditions).

We'll let you know whether we hear definite word from the mayor.

In the meantime, the Eh? desk regrets the error.

P.S. It's not too late to join the crazies. You can register beginning at noon Saturday at Grandma's Sports Garden.

Fresh photos from the fox box

Our friends over at Fox 21 News staked out the Lake Superior Zoo and got some footage of the new bat-eared fox kits.

The little boy and girl kits were born Jan. 24 to parent foxes Nellie and Sampson.

Their cameraman says it was dark (bat-eared fox are nocturnal critters), but he was able to get some video nonetheless. Check it out at www.fox21online.com .
