The Frank Capra-directed drama premiered in Washington, D.C., in 1939. It’s the story of a naïve, young U.S. senator played by Jimmy Stewart who arrives at the Capitol only to be confronted by corruption and backroom dealings.
The screenplay was written by Sidney Buchman, who was born in Duluth in 1902 and initially attended the University of Minnesota. He also wrote the senior play at Duluth Central in 1920. A one-time member of the Communist Party, Buchman was blacklisted in the McCarthy era.
David Ouse, reference librarian at the Duluth Public Library, and UMD history professor Alexis Pogorelskin will introduce and discuss this film.
The cost of the film and dinner is $5. To reserve your seat and dinner, contact the Temple Israel office at (218) 724-8857.
