Duluth Public Schools, in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Health, is planning to host voluntary vaccination clinics for children 5 to 11 years old as early as late next week, pending the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's expected emergency use approval of the Pfizer vaccine.

The federal Food and Drug Administration authorized the Pfizer vaccine's use in children 5 to 11 years old on Friday.

“This will be a significant game changer for so many,” Superintendent John Magas said in a news release. “The well-being of many of our youngest learners will be less at risk. Student and staff quarantining will be significantly reduced. We will continue to examine each of our safety precautions to consider what may be modified given this change. This is great news in taking a step toward greater normalcy, safety and improved learning at the same time."

Families will receive sign-up information from their student's elementary or middle school, though walk-ups will also be welcome, according to the school district. A parent or guardian must provide written permission and be present during the vaccination.

The free clinics will only be for students 5 to 11 years old.
