Duluth Public Schools has installed a substitute principal at Denfeld High School, and it's a familiar name.

Former Duluth East High School Principal Laurie Knapp will take over on a substitute basis. Knapp had retired in 2016, but continued to work with student teachers in the district.

"Her experience with the Duluth Public Schools allows her to support the staff, students, and families as we begin the new school year," Superintendent Bill Gronseth told the News Tribune on Monday. "We are fortunate in that it is not unusual for retired staff to continue to spend time supporting our staff and students in some capacity."

Knapp takes over for Tonya Sconiers, who was placed on administrative leave earlier this summer by the school district. Sconiers, a longtime Denfeld principal, and her legal team have intimated that her suspension came six weeks after her attorneys began to investigate what they have described as "illegal actions" taken by the school district.

Knapp has spent more than 30 years in the district, both as a teacher and administrator.
