The University of Wisconsin-Superior announced Thursday that Maria Stalzer Wyant Cuzzo has been named interim provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Cuzzo, currently a professor of legal studies and coordinator of the school's legal studies and criminal justice program, replaces interim provost Jackie Weissenburger, who in turn replaced provost Molly Smith in March.

Chancellor Renée Wachter said in a statement that Cuzzo's background would serve the campus well.

"She has served at UW-Superior for 25 years as a senior faculty member and campus leader and knows our past, present, and can help support our future. ... Maria has an extensive network of engaged community partners that will extend our reach into our community."

Cuzzo will assume the post starting July 1, though she already has been working with Weissenburger to ensure a smooth transition, the statement said. She will remain in the position through the 2019-20 academic year while the school updates its strategic plan, according to Jim Biros, university relations specialist.

Thursday's announcement marks the fourth appointment to the post since 2016. Weissenburger served as interim provost from 2016 to 2018 before Smith took over in June of that year. When Smith left the post this spring, Weissenburger again stepped into the role.

New dean announced

Thursday's statement also announced Nicholas Danz as the school's new dean of academic affairs and graduate studies beginning July 1, replacing Jayant Anand.

Danz currently is associate dean of academic affairs, professor of plant science and natural sciences and department chair of UW-Superior's Natural Sciences department.
