East barely earns bid for state Alpine meet

Two-time defending Minnesota high school girls champion Duluth East survived a tiebreaker Tuesday at the Section 7 meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik to qualify for the state finals.

Two-time defending Minnesota high school girls champion Duluth East survived a tiebreaker Tuesday at the Section 7 meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik to qualify for the state finals.

East tied with Forest Lake for second place and advanced by having a better fifth-place finisher. The top 10 individuals and top two teams qualify for the state meet Feb. 14 at Giants Ridge. Chisago Lakes won the girls team title.

The East boys, led by individual champion Nels Roningen, claimed the team title and Centennial was second.

Roningen, a senior, had a two-run time of 1 minute, 12.57 seconds, Jay Williams of Hibbing was second in 1:12.70 and Max Tusa of Hermantown third in 1:13.40.

Duluth Central exchange student Barbara Mikova of Slovakia won the girls individual title in 1:17.86, Elke Wood of Duluth Marshall was second at 1:19.15 and Amy Sienko of East was third in 1:19.61.
