Chester Bowl Ski Area reopened over the weekend thanks to the efforts of staff and the Duluth Public Works Department that trucked in loads of snow.
Nearly a foot of water had stood on top of the ice on the pond after last week's rains, rendering the ski hill unusable.
But crews diverted the water down Chester Creek and brought in about 30 dump-truck loads of snow from nearby parking lots. That made enough base for skiers to cross the frozen pond and access the hill and chairlift.
Thanks to those efforts, Chester Bowl will be open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today and every day through Feb. 22 for the midwinter school break. The Ski Hut race postponed Friday due to the water problem has been rescheduled to March 6.
