The city of Duluth has established a drop-off site at at the former police firing range -- on Rice Lake Road, north of Marshall School -- for tree limbs, brush and other vegetation that required removal following Thursday’s storm.
The site will accept storm debris free of charge from residents who haul it to the site. City staff will be on hand from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily starting today, July 22, through Sunday, July 24.
The city will accept only storm-damaged trees and other vegetation. Any household garbage or other items will be turned away.

Another option for Duluth-area residents with storm debris is the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District.

The WLSSD Yard Waste Compost Site at 27th Avenue West on the waterfront is accepting woody debris and brush. It will be open extended hours Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
It accepts:
- Brush (any material over 1/4 inch in diameter, from Minnesota only) - $8/yard. WLSSD facilities ban brush from Wisconsin due to the presence of emerald ash borer in Douglas County.
- Dirt and Sod (3 yard limit, no businesses) - $8/yard
- Twigs a quarter-inch in diameter or less, leaves, grass clippings, house & garden plants - free
- Root balls are not accepted
The WLSSD Materials Recovery Center on Rice Lake Road near the airport is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. It's accepting:
Brush - $8/yard
Root balls containing dirt and soil - $22/yard.
Other storm debris, such as shingles or building materials - $22/yard
