The Duluth School Board unanimously approved a new teacher's contract at tonight's board meeting.
The contract provides a 1 percent salary increase each year of the two-year contract, which spans from 2009 to 2011. It also allows the district to explore a new approach to health insurance, which could result in savings for the district.
Superintendent Keith Dixon said he was pleased with the bargaining process between the district and the Duluth Federation of Teachers, which led to an agreement before the current contract expires.
"I think it speaks to the process we have ... with our DFT partners that says let's really sit down together and look at the best interest of the district and the best interest of the students and the best interest of the employees," he said. "We were able to put together a very progressive contract."
This was the second time in the last 25 years that the district and the DFT were able to reach an agreement this early.
